What are the different styles of yoga at the Center? Although there are many different styles of hatha yoga, they all share the same basic principles, and each is a synthesis integrating the influence of intertwining traditions dating from the past century to more than a millennium ago. You can try different styles at the Center by taking makeups, dropping in to other classes, or buying a multi-class card

YOGA with Chip Hartranft & Carol Nelson offers a flowing meditative style drawn from the Krishnamacharya lineage. Emphasis is on mindfully allowing the body and breath to reorganize naturally, optimizing the powerful internal and awareness effects of practice and leading to profound relaxation. Chip's classes also feature sitting meditation and yin yoga, with deeply nourishing internal stretches that release tight joints, stimulate the body's energy meridians or nadis, and foster a radiant sense of presence

ANUSARA-INSPIRED YOGA I/II (Julia Novina) Anusara means Ôflowing with GraceÕ and is a practice of the physical postures which celebrates the heart and empowers us to align ourselves with the flow of nature. We approach asana through a clear system of biomechanical alignment principles, and practice cultivating the awareness of life as a joyful adventure. Anusara-inspired yoga is playful, mindful, challenging, and transformative

BREATH¥FLOW¥STILLNESS (Cynthia Gramer) This class is devoted to the inhale and the exhale, to deep relaxation and true connection with the present moment. Combining simple movements with the rhythmic flow of breath and the intention to be present can lead to profound relaxation and vitality. This class is open and beneficial to all ages, styles, and levels

New! ELEMENTAL YOGA COMMUNITY CLASS (Amy Steiner, Dasha Chapman, Fiona Akhtar, Ginny Hamilton, and Julie Zeitz) is a weekly class donated by The Center and taught without compensation by recent graduates of Bo Forbes' Elemental Yoga Mind-Body Teacher Training, with proceeds going to charity. A fusion of flow/vinyasa yoga and bodywork, Elemental Yoga features frequent isometric stretches, innovative use of props, and creative sequencing. A synergy of long holds, a slow flow of poses seamlessly linked by the breath, and extensive alignment instruction, Elemental Yoga is designed to help students reduce stress, shift long-held patterns, awaken internal awareness, and facilitate the process of healing and growth. While they are challenging on the physical level, EY classes focus on anatomy and alignment, which makes them accessible and safe for practitioners of all levels

New! FORREST YOGA (Jessica Abelson) is a celebration of Spirit, a profound but beginner-friendly practice developed by celebrated yogini Ana Forrest that focuses on physical and psychological healing. Classes include grounding, centering, neck and shoulder unwinding, core strengthening, standing postures, and vinyasa flow, as well as beginning backbends and inversions depending on class theme, and conclude with deep relaxation

GENTLE YOGA (Liz Owen) approaches asana practice with postures that gently stretch, strengthen and soothe the body. Restorative poses are also presented to nurture the bodyÕs energy into balance and cultivate deep relaxation to help release stress and let the body/mind rest deeply. This is a wonderful combination for re-energizing the body and de-stressing the mind

INSIGHT MEDITATION (Chip Hartranft) is the simplest, most natural method for human beings to see things as they are. Through mindfulness, or sustained attention to the unfolding of each moment, we learn to abide in the present, grounded in reality rather than the cloud-kingdom of our memories, desires and fears. Participants will develop equanimity and insight using the 2,500-year-old yogic path of the Buddha, moving as the mind becomes tranquil and steady toward the freedom of effortless awareness

IYENGAR YOGA (Annie Hoffman, Arthur Kilmurray, Liz Owen) is a rigorous, detailed approach to yoga movement, based on the innovative work of B.K.S. Iyengar. Classes impart a precise, thorough understanding of the body and sensation, while developing agility, core strength and balance

KRIPALU YOGA (Kim Childs & Diann Siegel) was developed by Amrit Desai and other teachers at the Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA. It integrates ancient and contemporary teachings in a well-rounded, unforced style. Deep, even breathing is emphasized, as well as modification of postures to suit all bodies. A spirit of exploration and compassion guides the approach, which may include warm-ups,Êa posture flow, guided relaxation, and meditation

TIBETAN BUDDHIST YOGA (Lama Willa Miller) is Ômeditation in motionÕ. While many wisdom traditions focus on meditation as the way to enlightenment, Tibetan Buddhist yoga takes a holistic perspective. By working with the entire human organismÑ body, breath, energy and mindÑa uniquely rapid and deep awakening experience is possible. Willa's weekly class explores this ancient practice through gentle movements, breath exercises and meditations that increase the flow of prana through the meridians of the body and enliven the energy centers that facilitate the awakening of joy and balance. Each class includes both movement and sitting meditation, as well as basic training in the tradition's somatic perspective. Tibetan Buddhist Yoga is open to people of all ages, abilities and levels. It is designed to meet your needs, and is especially helpful for people who want to develop a meditation practice but have difficulty sitting for long periods

New! TIBETAN BUDDHIST MEDITATION: Everyday Dharma (Lama Willa Miller) Wanting to learn to meditate but feeling like you don't have time? In this 10 week course, Willa Miller Ð an authorized teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition - will introduce a series of user-friendly meditation practices from the Tibetan wisdom tradition designed for easy integration into everyday life. Over the summer, we will learn the basics of setting up a sacred space, how to begin a regular meditation practice, and ways of breathing, resting the mind, and being in the body that awaken wisdom. We will learn one new meditation per week, and will discuss how to integrate the principals of meditation into our daily activities, into family life, and into relationships. ÊThese meditations are drawn from Willa's upcoming book Everyday Dharma, a book introducingÊancient Buddhist practices that facilitate the development of compassion, wisdom, joy and a deep gratitude for living

YOGA FLOW (Rebecca Conant) is an exhilarating and refreshing Sunday morning yoga class in a moderately heated room that offers a gentler, more accessible alternative to Yoga Vinyasa (see below). Yoga Flow is open to all - no prior yoga experience required

YOGA FOR CHILDREN, ages 3.9-6 & 7-11 (Blance Allen) Children blossom from the inside out. At times, their pace of movement is much faster than their rate of development. Yoga gives them an opportunity to slow down, reconnect to their natural rhythm, and balance their energy. Each class presents a consistent series of postures to explore flexibility, encourage concentration and stimulate inner curiosity

YOGA FOR THE 2ND HALF OF LIFE (Lauren Worsh, Cynthia Gramer) A restorative, gentle, and nurturing yoga class. In this class we practice safe yoga postures, gentle movement, and breathing exercises to develop strength and flexibility and to allow deep relaxation to occur. It is appropriate for anyone who wants to reduce stress, and is ideal for older students and for those who are struggling with a chronic illness or injury which limits their ability to participate in a more vigorous yoga practice. The approach is eminently gentle

YOGA VINYASA (Lauren Worsh) A heart-centered, vigorous, slow-flow style of yoga taught to the rhythms of soulful music and elemental breath in a room heated to 85û. This practice cultivates core strength, flexibility of body and mind, vitality and contentment. Warming flows of linked postures and conscious breath are enhanced through the mindfulness practices and attention to bio-mechanically precise alignment

YOUTH YOGA, ages 12-15 (Blance Allen) As the early teen years unfurl, it can be a challenge to balance a deepening sense of autonomy with the growing responsibility and connection that go with maturity Ð andÊ all while body and mind are changing almost daily!Ê What a wonderful thing to find a place for relaxing, for stories and fun with friends, and discovering tools for inner peace. Youth Yoga explores yogic teachings through flowing series of movements, breathing practices, relaxation and meditation
